It acts as something of a preview for Evo Las Vegas, the largest and most prestigious event of the year.

Evo Las Vegas is taking place 26-28 June this year, meaning it’s less than a month away. It features 12 fighting game titles, some getting a massive Top 8 in a stadium based on registration numbers. Right now, the games with the most early bird entries are Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, 2XKO, and Guilty Gear Strive. But will that change?

Before the Las Vegas event arrives, here are five things we learned from Evo Japan.

1. Arslan Ash is desperate for a win

Arslan Ash is the undisputed top Tekken player in the world, with a total of seven Evo titles under his belt. However, Evo Japan proved to be a rough time for the pro, who recently moved to Japan to place even greater focus on Tekken. It was a huge letdown.

“9th place. Not happy with my decisions today, especially character choices. I’ll learn from this and come back stronger,” Arslan Ash stated on X.

He won DreamHack Atlanta soon after, but fans felt he was making excuses for his underwhelming performance. He still didn’t seem to be playing to his usual standard, claiming it was due to already qualifying for the Esports World Cup, but does this mean Evo Las Vegas is another wash?

I’d say no. Arslan Ash has been very vocal about his feelings on Evo Las Vegas. He claimed that adding all of these other Evo events (including Evo France and Evo Singapore) has lessened the prestige of Evo Las Vegas, which he believes should be the only Evo, representing the best-of-the-best after months of grinding.

After such a poor showing at the last few tournaments, Arslan will be looking to claim another Evo championship this summer.

2. Fighting game players love drama, and respect it

Victory “Punk” Woodley was the highlight of Evo Japan. After proposing to his long-time girlfriend backstage, Punk went on to have one of the most memorable Street Fighter 6 moments of the entire weekend.

While competing in the Loser’s Final against Higuchi Kojiro, Punk performed a series of rapid taunts over his opponent’s character. At first, it seemed like the FGC believed this was disrespectful. But Japanese players applauded the trolling. Many praised Punk for being so cocky, behaving like colourful, over-the-top supervillain. Some compared the behaviour to that of pro wrestling, full of bravado.

Punk has always been known for his controversial antics. While his outspoken nature has landed him in trouble with the FGC at times, it’s clear that the Evo stage was the right spot to show off his confidence and chaos. It’s no surprise: rivalries are a huge part of the FGC. In Super Smash Bros., pop-offs are one of the most exciting parts of in-person matches. This is when a player will jump up and celebrate after a victory if the match was particularly intense or meaningful. Competitors have sometimes performed cartwheels across the stage or thrown chairs. That kind of visceral passion and “realness” is what makes the FGC stand out.

3. And they demand respect back

One of the biggest controversies at Evo Japan concerned a face-off held beforehand. The Kemonomichi Legends LIVE match pitted two top Street Fighter 6 players against each other – Daigo Umehara against Saul Leonardo “MenaRD” Mena II. Evo took over the broadcast production, but the FGC expressed disappointment at how it was handled.

The event was happening in the first place because MenaRD had respectfully asked Daigo to a first-to-10, telling him it would be the “greatest honour of my career.” This event was referred to by Japanese players as the “Beast’s Path,” a duel to the death to be taken very seriously.

However, Evo’s production had some fatal flaws. These included starting the match an hour late, poor translation, a lack of Japanese talent, and treating it like a hyped-up show-match. At one point, the casters asked people to clap for who they believed would win, which saw attendees complain the event was not being treated with the respect and seriousness it warranted.

4. “Johns” are alive and well (and real)

The term “john” was made popular in Super Smash Bros. It was inspired by a player in the 1990s who would provide an outlandish excuse every time he lost a match. Think a lack of sleep or a broken controller. This term has still stuck decades later.

Evo Japan was full of johns. However, was there merit to some of these complaints? It seemed every player was on the same page rather than making excuses. Due to ongoing lag, overheating, and other gameplay-disrupting issues, Punk said it was one of the worst experiences of his life.

Similar to the Daigo versus MenaRD match, the rest of the tournament organisation ran into challenges. Many brackets ran far behind time and games overlapped. This was troubling for anyone competing in multiple titles.

5. 2XKO is surviving, for now

Riot’s 2v2 fighter, 2XKO, has had a difficult few months. While the FGC was excited before the launch, it’s gone downhill since then. Frosty Faustings was the first official 2XKO major in Riot’s organised circuit. It had 962 entrants. However, by the time Evo Japan rolled around, there were only 428 signups.

It’s nothing to scoff at, but it’s also not extremely promising. Especially not when Riot claimed 2XKO was not performing as expected and laid off half the developers working on it. Riot clearly believed that 2XKO would stretch beyond the FGC and become a mainstream game, but it has remained niche even within the FGC, with high levels of complexity and a perceived lack of focus on its core unique concept, duos.

For now, 2XKO will likely limp into 2027, but it remains to be seen how far it will go beyond that. Evo Las Vegas will be a good indicator if the hype is still there.

What the event taught us about the Fighting Game Community (FGC) Evo Japan
